Cut & certification
What Is GCAL 8X Certification?
GCAL 8X is a cut grade from the Gem Certification & Assurance Lab (GCAL by Sarine) that a diamond earns only by scoring Excellent in all eight of its cut factors, from polish and proportions to brilliance, fire and, for round diamonds, hearts & arrows. One Very Good in any factor and the stone does not qualify.
Every loose diamond at Arelia Jewelers is a lab-grown diamond graded GCAL 8X.
GCAL 8X is a cut grade from the Gem Certification & Assurance Lab (GCAL by Sarine). To earn it, a diamond must score Excellent on eight separate cut factors. One Very Good, and it isn't 8X. That grade is printed on the certificate. It is a lab grade, not a shop nickname like "Super Ideal."
GCAL is an independent lab headquartered in New York, majority-owned by Sarine Technologies since May 2023. It announced the 8X grade in March 2021, starting with round diamonds. Because every Arelia stone carries a GCAL 8X certificate, this page doubles as a guide to reading the paperwork that comes with your diamond.

What are the eight criteria in GCAL 8X?
GCAL grades each factor on a five-step scale: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent. To earn 8X, a diamond needs Excellent in all eight. The certificate groups them into three categories.
Swipe the table sideways →
| # | Factor | Group | What it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Polish | Physical | The surface of the facets |
| 2 | External symmetry | Physical | Facet size and alignment |
| 3 | Proportions | Physical | Angles and dimensions for that shape |
| 4 | Optical brilliance | Light performance | White light returned to the eye |
| 5 | Fire | Light performance | White light split into color |
| 6 | Scintillation | Light performance | Flashes as the stone or light moves |
| 7 | Optical symmetry | Optical | How even the light pattern is |
| 8 | Hearts & Arrows (rounds) or shape aesthetics (fancy shapes) | Optical | See below |
On a round, factor 8 is Hearts & Arrows: eight arrows through the crown and eight hearts through the pavilion, photographed on the report. Our guide to hearts & arrows and super ideal cut covers it in depth.
On a fancy shape, GCAL scores shape aesthetics instead: outline, axis symmetry, length-to-width, and, on ovals and cushions, how little bow-tie shows. GCAL publishes 8X for oval, princess, pear, marquise, radiant and cushion. Read the certificate for that stone, and see lab-grown diamond shapes for what to check in each.

Only three of the eight factors are light performance. 8X is mostly how precisely the diamond was made. That precision is what lets it perform.
How is GCAL 8X different from an Excellent cut grade?
A standard Excellent cut is one overall word. GIA's round cut grade, for example, rolls brightness, fire, scintillation, design and craftsmanship into a single band. GCAL says more than half of round brilliants receive an Excellent cut grade, and that fewer than 1% of those Excellent rounds qualify as 8X. That figure is GCAL's. We have not seen an independent audit, so treat it as the lab's own number.
8X differs in three ways:
- Eight separate Excellent scores. A stone can't average its way in.
- Extra checks a standard cut grade doesn't isolate: optical symmetry, and Hearts & Arrows or shape aesthetics, with images on the report.
- Fancy shapes can receive an 8X cut grade. GIA does not issue a cut grade on fancy shapes.
An Excellent cut is a wide top shelf. 8X is eight passes, with the pictures attached.

How do you read a GCAL 8X certificate?
The certificate packs a lot onto one page. Here is what each part tells you.
Identity and the 4Cs
Certificate number, "Lab Grown Diamond," shape, measurements in millimeters, carat, color, clarity, fluorescence, girdle and culet. The measurements are how you confirm the stone in hand is the stone on paper, and they are what a jeweler uses to size prongs. For how these grades apply to lab-grown stones, see the 4Cs for lab-grown diamonds.
Growth method
GCAL states how the diamond was grown, HPHT or CVD, along with the diamond type.
Performance images
This is the part a standard report doesn't have. You will see an optical brilliance map, a scintillation image built from nine positions, an optical symmetry image, and actual photographs of the crown and pavilion, which for a round are the hearts and arrows patterns. Fire is shown in a video online.

On the brilliance map, white means light returned to your eye and dark blue means light lost. On the symmetry image, you are looking for an even, regular pattern. Irregular or lopsided shapes point to facets that are slightly off.
Fancy shapes get the same images. Here is what they look like for an 8X cushion, including the scintillation image, where each white flash is a point of sparkle.

Proportion diagram
A scanned diagram shows table, depth, crown angle and height, pavilion angle and height, girdle, culet, and star and lower-girdle lengths. The sample certificate above reads table 57%, depth 61.5%, crown 34.5°, pavilion 40.8°.
Clarity plot and identification
The clarity plot maps the stone's characteristics, such as needles or a cloud. A Gemprint optical fingerprint and a QR code link the stone to its online record.
What is the laser inscription?
Every Arelia diamond is inscribed on the girdle, its thin outer edge, with "GCAL 8X LG" followed by the certificate number, plus the words "LAB GROWN". It is visible only under a 10x loupe or a jeweler's microscope, and the number must match the certificate exactly. That match, together with the online record in GCAL's certificate search, ties the stone in your hand to its certificate.

The checks to run the day your diamond arrives are in how to buy a loose diamond online and have it set locally. You can also download a digital copy of the certificate from GCAL for your insurer.
What does GCAL's consumer guarantee cover?
GCAL backs its grading with a written guarantee. It is useful, but it is narrower than the name suggests.
- What it covers: the accuracy of the carat weight and the cut, color and clarity grades on the certificate, plus the natural or lab-grown identification. It applies to lab-grown stones.
- Conditions: the claim must be made within two years of the certificate date, the diamond must be unmounted, and you need the original retail receipt and the original certificate. Damaged, treated, re-polished or re-cut stones are excluded, and a challenge fee and return shipping apply.
- Payout: the difference between what you paid and the current fair-market value of an equivalent diamond, as determined by GCAL.
It is not insurance against loss, theft or damage. Keep your receipt and certificate somewhere safe. Claims require the stone unmounted, so if you question a grade, raise it before the stone is set.
Is the 360° video part of the GCAL certificate?
Yes. The 360° view on each Arelia product page comes from GCAL's imaging of that stone, alongside the light-performance images on the certificate.
Every loose diamond in Arelia's catalog carries a GCAL 8X certificate you can look up yourself.

What is GCAL?
GCAL (Gem Certification & Assurance Lab) is an independent diamond grading lab. It grades natural and lab-grown diamonds and created the 8X cut grade, which requires Excellent in all eight cut factors.
Is GCAL 8X a real lab grade or a retailer's marketing name?
It is a lab grade. GCAL announced the 8X cut grade in 2021 and prints it on the certificate. Terms like super ideal, by contrast, are retailer marketing language that no lab issues.
Does GCAL 8X mean the diamond has the best light performance?
Not exactly. 8X is a cut grade across eight factors, and only three of them (optical brilliance, fire and scintillation) measure light performance. The other five cover polish, external symmetry, proportions, optical symmetry and hearts & arrows. A stone must be Excellent in all eight.
Can fancy shapes like ovals be GCAL 8X?
Yes. GCAL publishes 8X for oval, princess, pear, marquise, radiant and cushion, scoring shape aesthetics in place of Hearts & Arrows. The list has changed over time, so check the certificate of the specific stone.
What does the laser inscription on an Arelia diamond say?
"GCAL 8X LG" followed by the certificate number, plus "LAB GROWN", on the girdle. It is visible only under magnification, and the number must match the certificate exactly.
Is the GCAL guarantee the same as insurance?
No. GCAL's guarantee covers the accuracy of the carat, color, clarity and cut grades on the certificate, for two years from the certificate date, on an unmounted stone with the original receipt. It does not cover loss, theft or damage, so insure your diamond separately.
