Fire, Brilliance and Scintillation: Why Cut Matters Most
Brilliance is the white light a diamond returns to your eye, fire is that light split into flashes of color, and scintillation is the sparkle you see when the diamond or the light moves. All three come from the cut.

What is brilliance?
Brilliance is the white light a diamond sends back to your eye. Light enters through the top, bounces off the angled facets underneath, and returns through the top. When the angles are right, the diamond looks bright from edge to edge.
When the angles are off, light leaks out of the bottom or sides. A diamond cut too deep or too shallow shows dark patches or a dull center, even with perfect color and clarity.
What is fire?
Fire is the flashes of color you see as a diamond moves. A diamond splits white light into its colors the way a prism does, and the facets spread those colors out.

Fire shows best under small, bright lights: candles, spotlights, ceiling lights. In soft daylight you see more white brilliance and less color. The balance between the two depends on the angles of the top half of the stone.
What is scintillation?
Scintillation is the sparkle: the flashes of light and the pattern of light and dark facets you see when the diamond, the light or your head moves.
Good scintillation needs crisp, evenly spaced flashes. When facets are misaligned, the flashes blur together or bunch up, and the diamond looks busy or flat.

Why does cut matter more than color or clarity?
Cut is the only one of the 4Cs that decides where the light goes, so it controls all three. At D–F color and VVS2 or better, color and clarity have no visible effect on sparkle; see the 4Cs for lab-grown diamonds.
What should you look for before you buy?
- A cut grade broken down by factor. GCAL 8X scores brilliance, fire and scintillation separately and requires Excellent in each, alongside five precision factors. What Is GCAL 8X Certification? covers all eight.
- The light-performance images of the actual stone, not a typical one. GCAL provides them for every 8X shape, not only rounds.
- A 360° video. Sparkle only shows in motion. Every Arelia diamond page has one.
- Hearts & Arrows on rounds. A sharp, even pattern shows precise facets. See Hearts & Arrows and super ideal cut.
Every Arelia diamond is graded GCAL 8X, with its light-performance images and 360° video on its own page.

What is the difference between fire and brilliance in a diamond?
Brilliance is white light reflected back to your eye. Fire is the same light split into flashes of color, like a small prism. The cut decides how much of each you see.
What is scintillation in a diamond?
Scintillation is the sparkle: the flashes of light and the pattern of light and dark facets you see when the diamond, the light or your eye moves.
Do color and clarity affect sparkle?
Much less than cut. At D–F color and VVS2 or better, color and clarity have no visible effect on sparkle. Cut decides where the light goes.
Do lab-grown diamonds have the same fire and brilliance as mined diamonds?
Yes. They are the same material with the same optical properties, so the same cut produces the same fire and brilliance.
